The Do Açu Superport is being implemented in São João da Barra, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The A.R.G.-Cilvilport Consortium is responsible for the construction of the iron ore terminal, bridge, docking piers for ships, and a shipyard. The port complex is a world reference
in terms of technology and infrastructure.
The port complex will have a 3-km long, 27.5-m wide access bridge (already completed) and a draught of 21 meters, with later expansion to 25 meters. The structure will allow the docking of large size ships, such as Capesizes, VLCCs and Chinamax. Operation is scheduled to start in 2013.
During the bridge construction, the concrete structure advances 9 meters daily towards the sea. A total of 934 piles have been driven in for the construction of the bridge, with a span of 18 meters between piles. One thousand and six hundred premolded beams have been launched, which consumed approximately 90,000 m3 of concrete.
This grand work follows the quality and specially the safety standards. In November 2009, the mark of 335 days without accidents with loss of time was superseded, corresponding to 5 million man-hours of exposure without accidents.
